Feminism

Disclaimer: I’m not a feminist by any means, but this story caught my attention.

As a woman, I understand the need to dress nicely and look presentable every day. Today co-host, Karl Stefanovic, wore the same suit every day for a year. No one noticed. Stefanovic did this experiment to show the degree of sexism in the television industry. According to Stefanovic, his co-host is constantly criticized for her outfits.

Dr. Oz

Dr. Oz was called in front of Congress and accused of being a fraud in June. He endorses weight loss pills without testing them first. These weight loss pills have now been found to have quite the list of side effects. Side note: No over-the-counter “medication” has to be tested in order to be sold.

If you aren’t up to date on the latest of the Dr. Oz scandal, I ask that you watch John Oliver on his HBO program: Last Week Tonight explain it. Here is the link to his youtube video.

All right, now that we are all on the same page, let’s continue. Last week, Dr. Oz’s publicity people decided it would be a good idea to have Dr. Oz tweet out this: “What is your biggest question for me?”

Any public relations person (or lawyer) knows that you shouldn’t ask a question unless you know the answer. As you heard in the video, America isn’t Dr. Oz’s biggest fan right now. Spoiler alert: this didn’t go as Dr. Oz or his team had planned.

Here’s some the answers Dr. Oz received. You can find more by searching the hashtag “#OzInbox.”

Enjoy.

ISIS

Today it was confirmed that another United State citizen was beheaded at the hands of the Islamic State. His name was Peter Kassig, a formed Army Ranger and aid worker. Kassig was captured in 2013.

Kassig is the fifth of the 23 hostages held by ISIS to be executed. All five have been citizens of the United States or the United Kingdom.

David Rohde, a journalist who in 2009 escaped Taliban captivity in Afghanistan said, “They take any foreigners they can get and use the Europeans for ransom and the Americans for publicity. ”

“My captors were absolutely convinced that the U.S. government secretly paid ransoms–and then publicly denied it–because that’s what European governments regularly do,” Rohde said.

Peter Kassig had converted to Islam and aided the Syrian people during his return after getting out of the military.

Isis posted a video of a masked man standing over the severed head of Peter Kassig, according to the New York Times. To read President Obama’s reaction, click here.

Kansas Honor Flight

On Friday, 30 veterans came home from a special trip to Washington D.C. to see the monuments from their wars. These were veterans from World War II and Korea. Their trip was completely paid for by the Kansas Honor Flight. The KHF’s mission is to send the remaining Kansas veterans in our database to visit their War Memorial in Washington, D.C. before it’s too late for them.

While I was watching these men walk through hundreds of loved ones and supporters, one veteran said to me, “this is the best homecoming I’ve ever had.”

Those words had a huge effect one me as I never knew a time in which our veterans weren’t welcomed home, but that wasn’t uncommon for these men, but on this trip, according to another veteran, everyone stood up and clapped at each airport they arrived at. “It was an incredible sight,” Vernon Everhart, Korean veteran told me.

So as Veteran’s Day approaches, I ask that you remember to thank a veteran. It might be the only one they’ve gotten.

Join PRSSA

Friday, a group of young professionals took to Kansas City to attend the annual PRSSAKC day. While at this conference, we had the opportunity to network with PR professionals and attend discussion panels.

Each year, there is the PRSSAKC day in Kansas City; a regional conference, which is in Omaha this coming Spring; and a national conference. All of these events give you the opportunity to learn more about the field as well as network with area professionals as well as other colleges.

PRSSA has a parent chapter, PRSA. PRSA is the largest PR professional organization. Whenever you graduate, members of PRSSA get a discounted rate to join PRSA. This organization posts job offers and holds monthly meetings that help young professionals get their feet on the ground.

For more information and to join our local chapter at Wichita State, like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter or email us at wichitastateprssa@gmail.com

Why I am Boycotting Subway

I was listening to the radio recently when I heard an advertisement that went something like this:

OMG, you are eating a hamburger and fries?

So what, swimming suit season is over.

We’ve got to be in shape for our Halloween costumes. (proceed to mention multiple trashy Halloween costumes.)

This may seem like a good idea. What’s another reason for girls to lose weight? Parading around in lingerie. That’s what.

Well Subway, you lost me. I eat there because I enjoy your sandwiches. Subway’s bread is the best, but I will not support you telling me that I need to be skinny in order to show my body off for a silly holiday.

You’ve lost one of your faithfuls, Subway. You are better than this.

Video Editing

I did a salute to my past in this video: who I previously was, a gymnast and mixed that with who I want to be, a public relations practitioner. The skills I used to put this video together are getting me ready for who I want to become.

Why I Am Getting My Master’s Degree

The day of the first generation college student is over, which means that there is a huge emphasis on getting your education. Joining the workforce after high school has a negative connotation of laziness. With that, bachelor’s degrees are a dime a dozen. Everyone is getting one.

With the current job market, you need something extra to make you stand out from this immense crowd. That’s why I have decided to pursue graduate school. Albeit, graduate school is expensive and difficult, but it will give you an advantage in the job market, plus gives you time to ready yourself to enter the “real world.”

Not only does a master’s degree look good on your resume, it also helps make you an expert in your field. An additional 36 hours of upper level coursework, can work wonders. During my undergraduate, I feel as though only half of my courses were even related to my future career, so doubling my exposure to the subject can only help.

To read more about why the master’s degree is the new bachelor’s, read this article from the New York Times.
